Say hello to humanity in 2174, no longer what it once was after the long-gone plague and Chimerical Event. Welcome to Nuevo Carcangel, an unlikely port city on the edge of a desert, hanging on by wits, luck, and its people. It is just one of the hundreds of city-states of the Interstate Trade Compact. Goodharbor is to the north, holding sway over much of the region’s politics. Port Didacus lies south, a jewel and prize of a city that is slipping free of Goodharbor. And Nuevo Carcangel is between them.

Marlowe is just one among the few million living in Nuevo Carcangel. She’s a private detective, accidental thief and occasional gambler, and has a few grudges of her own to settle. As the region heads for war, those like Marlowe will be pulled in, tested as friends or lovers, and dare fate. She’s well aware of her namesake’s life and violent end.

The Devil’s real name is Necessity. If he can be cheated, then Marlowe will or die trying.
